Note: Some updates may touch on wider Pokémon news beyond the TCG.
🔵 GameStop Keeps Hiking Pokémon Card Prices Above MSRP
GameStop has been steadily increasing prices on Pokémon TCG products, with markups now rivaling reseller prices. Sleeved booster packs that typically retail for $4.99 are being sold at $6.99, while some products have seen much steeper hikes. A GameStop exclusive Ultra Premium Collection originally sold at $180 is now listed at $274.99, and employees report the Charizard UPC has jumped from its $119.99 MSRP to $249.99.
Despite widespread complaints, customers continue buying at the inflated prices, which some GameStop employees say has only encouraged further increases. Workers at multiple locations report being instructed to print new, higher price tags, with some comparing the practice to dynamic pricing based on real-time demand. Fans and employees alike have pointed out that the markups are creating a cycle where scalpers then raise their own prices in response.
🔵 7,000-Pack Ascended Heroes Study Reveals SIR Pull Rates
A community-driven study of over 7,000 Ascended Heroes packs has provided the most comprehensive pull rate data for the set so far. The data, collected manually by a group of collectors across blisters, ETBs, tins, and collection boxes, found that Special Illustration Rares appear at roughly 1 in 101 packs, or 1 in 2,222 for a specific SIR.
The study also found that no individual SIR is harder or easier to pull than another, with pull rates surprisingly even across all 22 variations. Gold cards appeared at roughly 1 in 783, though the sample size was noted as too small to draw reliable conclusions. The researchers estimate you would need to open over 1,500 packs for a good chance at pulling a specific SIR you're after.
🔵 Pokémon TCG Projection Mapping Show Premieres in Tokyo for 30th Anniversary
The Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building is now home to "Pokémon Trading Card Game: TOKYO LUMINOUS NIGHT," a projection mapping show that launched on March 20th to celebrate the TCG's 30th anniversary. The show transforms the 48-story building's exterior into a massive canvas that brings card artwork to life in three dimensions, projected onto a surface recognized by Guinness World Records.
Around 8,000 people attended opening day, including TCG fans, international visitors, and families. Screenings run on weekends and holidays at 6:30 PM, 7:30 PM, and 9:00 PM, and are free to attend with no registration required.
