Chinese Pikachu Gengar Sells $5.2k 👻, 20th Anniv. Japanese Unique Box Art Boosters Picking Up Steam 🎂, Non-English Vintage Booster Boxes Gaining Popularity 🔤, Market For Ultra Niche Cards Still Strong 🔥
📋 TLDR
This week saw continued strength across sealed products, singles, and niche collectibles. Prices for anniversary sets in both Japanese and English remain robust, highlighted by steady sales of CP6 booster boxes (featuring the Pikachu EX XY Promo) and rising demand for “modern vintage” Mega Evolution-related releases. Singles markets were driven by significant activity in Chinese-exclusive promos, notably the Pikachu Gengar which is matching its hype in the past weeks, and ongoing interest in high-end Japanese cards and popular Tag Team duos. In vintage segments, non-English Base Set booster boxes continue gaining traction, with French and German editions attracting strong buyer attention. Meanwhile, incredibly rare and niche collectibles like the Mega Sachiko EX and vintage promotional items demonstrate healthy demand at the top of the market.
📦 Sealed Product Market Highlights
A pair of XY Primal Clash ETBs sold separately (1, 2) for around $4.5k. These prices are somewhat of an outlier compared to past sold listings but still close to a significant $1k jump within the past month and a half (ETBs are generally less desirable than booster boxes). This set features predominantly Mega Evolution Pokemon. auction. In the July 7th report, I shared a sold listing (seller accepted a $3k offer from $5k) for a complete 25th Anniversary Generations Mythical Collections set which features promo cards of legendary Pokemon (released as the Dream Shine Collection in Japan). Recently another complete set sold at $4k helping solidify the hype for a wide variety of 25th Anniversary sealed products and not just limited to booster boxes.
💎 Singles & Graded Cards Highlights
CGC Pristine 10 Pikachu Gengar sells for $5.2k via eBay auction - Jul. 25thThere’s been a lot of hype around the new 151 wave release in China and with it, the new Pikachu Gengar card which has been the most highly anticipated among the Chinese exclusive Pikachu cards. For reference, the Pikachu Gengar card has multiple recent sales hovering slightly above the $4k mark compared to the standalone Pikachu in the $1k range and Pikachu Psyduck close to $2k.
Will this hype maintain or will we possibly see these prices come down across the board? With this foray into a relatively new market it doesn’t seem likely that these cards would be introduced in English or other languages which would also likely crash the price.
This $5.2k price point, although potentially a slight outlier, is roughly a third of the initial market price of the Chinese Mew Promo which was limited to just 1510 copies.
A sequential pair of Pikachu Festa promos sold for $4,250. A Gengar & Mimikyu GX 165/181 from the Team Up set sold at $4.6k best offer.Similar to the other popular Tag Team cards such as the Latias & Latios, this card is seeing a steady rise in value and has already seen some recent sold listings cross the $5k mark. Will the hype of other Gengar cards such as the recently released Pikachu Gengar Chinese exclusively sustain this card's hype to the level of the Latias & Latios or will it just come down to Tag Team and Gengar popularity?
🕰️ Vintage & Niche Market Highlights
A copy of the incredibly rare Mega Sachiko EX sells for $14.9k via eBay auction - Jul. 26thFor anyone who may not be familiar with this card: This card was distributed during a special Japanese Pokémon TCG event and features Sachiko Kobayashi, a famous Japanese enka singer known for her extravagant performances and the artist responsible for a number of Pokemon anime opening theme songs. On the card, she’s portrayed as a Mega Evolution, which is complete with her own satirical “attack” called "Infinite Voice," a nod to her singing career. It should be noted that this card is not considered legal for tournament play.
A German 1st Edition Base Set booster box auction for $19.375k via Heritage Auctions (Note: the sold price includes the buyer’s premium of 25% so the seller would receive 25% less off the sold amount). (Not TCG related) A 1999 Pokemon Center Phone Card featuring the original starters (Charizard, Blastoise, Venusaur, and Pikachu) in a BGS 10 Pristine recently auction for $8k (best offer accepted from $11.5k).This card was a special edition phone card commemorating the 10,000,000 units sold milestone for the Pokemon franchise in 1999. (Despite it being called a phone card it doesn’t seem it was meant to function and primarily serves as a collectible item). This card has a population of 2 in a BGS 10 pristine (although the incredibly niche nature of this collectible potentially makes the grade less relevant).
📚 Educational Commentary – Collector’s Corner
When choosing a grading company, how do you know which one to go with?
Many new collectors are understandably tempted to use lesser-known grading companies due to lower fees, faster turnaround times, or local availability (or otherwise simply as a result of not having knowledge of the card grading process and the big companies involved). However, this decision can significantly impact resale value. Cards graded by obscure or newly established companies often carry little to no premium over raw cards. In contrast, cards graded by the "big three": PSA, BGS, and CGC, enjoy broader market trust and clearer price histories, which makes them far more liquid and desirable in the eyes of investors and collectors alike. PSA commands the highest resale value and broadest market recognition, especially for PSA 10s. BGS (Beckett) provides detailed subgrades for surface, centering, edges, and corners, and its rare Black Label Pristine 10s are the pinnacle for collectors. CGC is somewhat closer to PSA in terms of resale value and at times commands a significant premium over a PSA 10 sometimes to the tune of 1.5x.
🫐 Berries For Thought
💭 To what extent do you think new releases impact the increase in value of past releases? For example, the new Mega Evolutions sets impacting the sales of old Mega Evolution sets.
💭 How often do you collect sealed products outside of the typical booster box or ETB?
